NJ Manufacturing News: National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI)

Dear NJ Manufacturers,

On behalf of NJMEP, I wanted to make you all aware of a Federal Program called National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI)… a fancy way of renaming what many of us would call a “Center of Excellence.” The goal is for the Government to assist in creating 15+ of these in various Manufacturing Sectors – including the most recent release – Bio/Pharma/Life Sciences

So, you know New Jersey has put together a team (including Rutgers, NJIT, NJII, Princeton, and NJMEP) to go after this program and the $70 million in Federal investment over the next 5-years – and – the additional financial support required from the State – expected $250 million in total investment.

So why is this important to you all??

First, it is not a pure R&D program – and comprises key aspects of:

1. Industry, Manufacturing & Commercialization
2. Enhanced Supply Chain – connecting larger firms with SME’s
3. Workforce Development on all levels

Secondly, since the focus is a wide industry-base the program will include many aspects of STEM work including:

1. Process & Facility Engineering with In-Plant Support
2. R&D and Lab Work – Clinical & Testing
3. Pilot Plant Development
4. Quality Control
5. Manufacturing:
   • Pharmaceutical – Continuous & Traditional
   • Medical Devices
   • Packaging
   • Machinery – Complete & Spare Parts
   • Piping
   • Material Handling & Logistics

Lastly, in order for us to be successful on this effort…we need industry support from Small-Medium-Large firms in the industry and in supplementary industries. There will be a request for investment as an actual member of this program – and – there will be one for those that can support this in other ways.
